What Is Shin Splints

Medial tibial stress syndrome (Shin splints) is a painful condition exacerbated by exercise whereby the muscle tendons of the leg are being torn away from the bone. Usually cause by 3 muscles – Tibialis posterior, soles and Flexor digitorum longus.

Risk Factors 

  •  Rolling in of feet (pronation)
  • Genetics
  • Tight calf muscles
  • Training surfaces
  • Incorrect footwear
  • Not warming up, or cooling down
  • Excessive training or large increases in training
  • Leg length difference
  • Decrease in bone mineral density

Signs & Symptoms

  • Pain on the inside of the leg
  • Pain with exercise
  • Mild bruising around leg bones

Preventing Shin Splints

  • Gradual increases in training loads
  • Orthotics
  • Correct footwear
  • Training on soft/flat surfaces
  • Warm up, cool down
